The Folkloric Ballet of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT) was created in 1990 with the purpose of promoting inbound tourism. It presents a wide variety of choreographic works based on Guatemala’s cultural values, including traditions, legends, and expressions of the country’s diverse ethnic groups, as well as the historical and natural richness of its regions, music, and folkloric dances.

This performance showcases a unified presentation of various artistic expressions and folkloric interpretations to promote Guatemala nationally and internationally as a high-quality tourist destination.

The ballet has a repertoire of over 40 choreographies, based on folkloric representations of the cultural traditions of contemporary Mayan ethnic groups and Garífuna communities from the Atlantic coast. It also features mestizo and/or Creole popular dances from different historical periods and pieces inspired by Mayan mythology, such as the stories found in the Popol Vuh.

Its flexible programs can adapt to hotel ballrooms, neighborhood fairs, or grand theaters. The ensemble has received international acclaim in countries like Portugal, Spain, Germany, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, and the United States, proudly showcasing the best of Guatemalan traditions and customs.

The group has an extensive history and is currently directed by Licda. Ileana Reyes, one of its original members when it was founded by Architect Julia Vela.
