The Regional Costumes Unit was created in 1974 with the purpose of showcasing the traditional attire of Guatemala. Throughout its 45-year history, its main function has been to promote Guatemalan culture through presentations of regional costumes.

In compliance with the Organic Law of INGUAT, Article 5, paragraph (i), which states:
«To promote the formation of musical groups and other types of ensembles made up of Guatemalans wearing the traditional costumes of the various regions of the country, and to have them perform in bars, restaurants, and public places, offering them costume designs and assistance compatible with INGUAT’s goals for tourism growth and its operational capacities.»

It is important to note that during each presentation, the audience expresses great admiration, as they get to witness the explosion of color and style that characterize Guatemala’s Regional Costumes.

The Collection of Regional Costumes is showcased through Costume Parades, Folkloric Performances, and Promotional Attendants (Edecanes). Textiles are one of the most representative expressions of Guatemalan folk art.

This traditional clothing is highly varied and complex. It is based primarily on a textile tradition associated with the backstrap loom of pre-Hispanic origin, and the foot loom, introduced during the colonial period.

These garments reflect the history and ethnic diversity of Guatemala. They convey messages about the social status and culture of their wearers and affirm Mayan ethnic identity. The clothing varies from community to community in color, design, textile techniques, and how the garments are worn.

Today, the variety and vibrant colors of these costumes make them unique in the world. In each community, traditional dress varies depending on geographic location, gender, age, economic status, social standing, and occasion.
