This interactive map is a collaboration between the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT) and the Mundo Maya Organization, in coordination with the member countries, with the aim of highlighting the archaeological sites and natural reserves where the Maya Civilization was established.

The Maya Region currently encompasses the countries of Guatemala, Belize, western El Salvador and Honduras, and the Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Like any cultural region, this territory cannot be strictly defined by borders, so its limits have varied over time and represent areas of significant interaction with neighboring groups.

Among the full diversity of human cultures throughout history, the Maya stand out as one of the most remarkable. This distinction is not based solely on their extraordinary achievements in antiquity, but also on their admirable continuity over time, which has allowed them to preserve millennia-old customs and traditions. Before the Spanish conquest, the Maya Civilization excelled in Mesoamerica and throughout the American continent with unique accomplishments, including the development of a logo-syllabic writing system, a vigesimal numerical system that incorporated the concept of zero, the synchronization of more than five calendar systems, and the creation of complex cities within jungle environments that were not naturally suited to sustain thousands of inhabitants. Moreover, the architectural, sculptural, pictorial, and artisanal expressions of the ancient Maya peoples rival those documented in other regions of the world.
